iView
In a turn of events not at all surprising considering the massive digital movements that happen daily, Australian TV network ABC is launching it’s own online station.
Called iView, it is a move by one of the oldest broadcasters to regain their foothold and take their steps into the digital era.
A representative for the Australian Communications Minister said it was a groundbreaking move for the ABC.
“I think it’s the responsibility of the media to adjust to this new digital world,” Jason Clare said.
“The ABC is an absolute leader in this area.”
But what is iView?
Basically, it is a service that allows viewers to watch ABC programs online, streaming them off their web page (currently beta) at www.abc.net.au/iview.
The move is an interesting one because it signifies the first major move by Australian media to embrace digital media. While all the major newspapers and news outlets employ web sites that carry their traffic, including 9msn (also using features such as video streaming, flocking etc), this is the first approach to digital television.
As such, for Australians, it could mean a lot of changes to the way we view television. Rather than being restricted to a time slot in order to view a program, we can access whenever and wherever we like.
Because the public are now able to absorb the media more on their own terms, the interesting thing will be to see how this changes the Australian media outlets; Better programming? More diverse programming? How will it affect advertising?
At this stage, its hard to see exactly where this will lead.
Digital media though. Nature of the beast.
